Photo Voice is a process by which people can identify and represent their community’s strengths, concerns, and unique perspective, by using photography as their voice.
This summer, local residents were invited to participate in facilitated discussion groups and share their experiences of aging. Mental health professionals from the Mental Health Association partnered with Aging in Montclair and guided participants through discussion, art making, writing practice, and self-reflection. Together, the groups identified common themes of time, acceptance, freedom, possibilities, and more. Next, they went out into the world, cameras in hand, to capture their individual impressions.
Finally, each participant selected a single photograph, accompanied by their own personal statement, providing us with a window into their experience on aging.

Photo Voice – Moments in Time is made possible through the partnership of The Mental Health Association and Aging in Montclair. With special thanks to Montclair Public Library for hosting these workshops and the group exhibit, and to the Lynda and Larry Hollander Foundation for their generous sponsorship and artist reception. This exhibit is curated with the help of Intensive Family Support Services, (IFSS) and the IFSS team of graduate art therapy interns.
